Health and Wellbeing

Many of us leave the Services with long-term injuries; mostly physical, but sometimes psychological.  And the system in civilian life is much more complicated than turning up to sick parade and then doing as you are told.  But while it often takes much longer than we have been used to, it doesn’t need to because the NHS has promised to fast-track Veterans with service-related conditions.

The first thing you will need to do when you leave the Services is find a GP; you will find most GPs in Scotland in this section.  Apart from the NHS, there are many Veteran-focussed charities ready to help, so make use of them if you need to.  You will find their details here too, so please explore this section; it has a lot to offer.

Priority treatment within the NHS in Scotland for a service related condition

We are often asked about what Priority treatment means for veterans who have a service related injury, in these cases we would refer you to the current Scottish Government definition of Priority Treatment which can be found in the link here>>>

What does this mean in practice?

It means, for example, if you suffered any ill health or injury during your service - (this will normally, but not always, be recorded on your service medical records) - that now requires further treatment, your GP will indicate, when referring you to the relevant NHS department, with your consent, that your injury is related to your time in the Armed Forces. The NHS department will then take account of this in allocating you an appointment. They will review their current waiting list, and, providing there are not other patients with a greater clinical need on the list, you will be given a priority appointment.

Further information on this is available here>>>

Veterans Health

Information on specific NHS support for veterans in Scotland, as well as programmes and initiatives that you may access.

Friends and family, as well as health professionals, will also find helpful information on how best to signpost and treat veterans in need of primary and secondary health care.

Many of the health issues that veterans and their families can experience are identical to those occurring in the wider community. Sometimes however, those who have served feel that their needs are not fully understood by healthcare providers.

Recent initiatives have been aimed at improving understanding of the Armed Forces community, including the publication of a booklet for GPs and an online eLearning package. Please see Useful Resources section for more information.
